Sun Terrace Rehabilitation Center recently received a 5-star award from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
The CMS, which is the federal agency that oversees Medicare, created a data-driven system to help the public compare skilled nursing facilities. One of Medicare’s major responsibilities is to inspect health care facilities to ensure that patients receive safe and high-quality care.
The results of annual inspections made by trained health professionals are unannounced and performed by federal and state surveyors. The inspections were designed to help protect the health and safety of residents, including resident’s rights and general quality of life, and to determine if health and safety standards are being met.
There are three factors included in the rating system: Health inspections, staffing and quality. Staffing ratings takes into consideration the average number of care hours provided to each resident by nursing staff.
The quality ratings and survey results are posted on NursingHomeCompare.com, a Medicare website, says Jeff Cleveland, president of Clear Choice Health Care.
“Our goal in developing this unprecedented quality rating system is to provide families a straightforward assessment of nursing home quality, with meaningful distinctions between high and low performing homes,” said former CMS Acting Administrator Kerry Weems on the CMS website.
Being designated as “5-stars” places Sun Terrace Rehabilitation Center in the top 10 percent of all health care centers in the state. The ranking is defined as “much above average,” according to CMS.
“Sun Terrace is proud to continually receive a 5-star rating from annual inspections,” says Kimberly Smith-Lehigh, administrator for Sun Terrace Rehabilitation Center.

“The 5-stars is all about patient-centered care. And that means we take away any obstacle to achieve each patient’s optimum in health, cognition, mobility, and function,” says Lehigh.
Lehigh believes the rating system is a good benchmark for measuring and selecting quality-run skilled nursing rehab facilities, but she highly encourages the public to site visit selected facilities. She says a personal tour will continue to show the five-star rating and customer dedication seen throughout the facility.
